Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry comprises several procedures that improve the aesthetics of one’s smile. Optimum oral health comes with proper functionality, healthy tissues in the mouth and an impeccable smile. This is where cosmetic dentistry comes into the picture, as it helps you get the smile that you always dreamed of having! Some of the procedures that are primarily intended towards improving the aesthetics of the teeth also restore the functionality of the mouth.

Popular cosmetic dental procedures

Teeth Whitening: Discolored teeth can ruin one’s smile entirely. It hinders the patient’s confidence and makes them too self-conscious every time they smile. Teeth whitening is the process of removing the stains and discoloration from the surface of the teeth. The dentist makes use of a whitening gel, that essentially acts as a dental bleach. The gel is applied to the teeth and left to stay on it for a certain duration of time. A laser light will be used to activate the gel and get rid of the stains. The process may be repeated multiple times to achieve the desired results.

Dental Crowns: Crowns are restorative dental appliances that cover the surface of a tooth in its entirety. They can be used to treat chipped, discolored, misshapen, and cracked teeth. They provide an aesthetic makeover and also restore teeth that are damaged due to an injury. Since they are made from a tooth-colored ceramic material, they perfectly mimic the appearance of natural teeth.

Dental Bridges: Bridges are alternatives to natural teeth that are usually extracted due to an infection or an injury. They consist of a prosthetic tooth structure that is accompanied on either side by crowns (which help to anchor the tooth in place). They are made from tooth-colored porcelain and look exactly like real teeth. They prevent the drifting of the remaining teeth and also restore the patient’s ability to bite, chew and talk like before.

Veneers: Veneers are thin, wafer-like porcelain shells that cover the frontal surface of teeth. They can cover small cracks, chipping, discoloration and also strengthen the teeth by serving as a support. They are tough and long-lasting.

Fillings: Dental fillings are applied to a cavity that is caused due to the decay of a tooth. The cavity would be cleaned, disinfected and the filling material would be applied to cover it. It will be shaped according to the contour of the tooth and a curing light would be used to harden it. They can also cover small cracks.

Oral Cleaning: Oral cleaning comprises two procedures, namely scaling and root planing. They are procedures used to remove the accumulated plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth and roots respectively. Along with providing an aesthetic benefit, they also reduce the risk of gum diseases such as periodontitis and significantly improve one’s oral health.

Bonding: Bonding is a process of applying a photosensitive composite resin onto the surface of a tooth. It can be used to restore the shape of broken, chipped or misshapen teeth, decrease the spacing between adjacent teeth, lengthen worn out teeth, etc. Again, a curing light will be used to harden it.

Dental Implants: Considered as the best replacement for natural teeth, dental implants provide a great aesthetic makeover as well as restore the functionality of the mouth. Implants are fixed to the jawbone and an artificial crown will be placed on it. They are sturdy and long-lasting.

Inlays and Onlays: Inlays are restorations used to cover the cusp of a tooth. Onlays are custom restorations that fit exactly into a cavity and help cover it.
